Lesson Plan-Softball
Essential Standard- 9.MS.1: Apply competent motor skills and
movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
Clarifying Objectives:
PE.9.MS.1.1 Use basic and advanced skills to participate
proficiently in at least three of the following activities or compositions:
aquatics, team sports, individual sports, dual sports, outdoor pursuits,
self-defense, dance and gymnastics.
PE.9.MS.1.2 Apply fundamental motor skills and complex skills
needed to participate successfully in at least three lifetime activities.
Focus and Review-
Good morning class! Today we will be continuing our softball unit.
Last time we were together we played a full game of softball.
Today I will be filling in for Mr. Drum as the pitcher for both
teams. You may remember that the
last time you played everyone had a chance to bat before the end of the
inning. Today we will be switching
things up. After the team that is
at bat accumulates 3 outs we will switch sides just like a normal softball game. Does anyone have any
questions before we begin the warm-up?
If not, we will begin stretching!
Statement of Objectives:
Psychomotor- Students will use fundamental motor skills to
perform certain aspects of the game of
softball.
Cognitive- Students will learn and understand how to properly
field, throw, and hit a softball.
Affective- Students will be motivated to participate and learn
more about the game of softball.
Teacher Input-
Before we head out to the field I would like to go through a few static and dynamic stretches that are important
to perform before you participate in softball, or any sport for that matter. I would like all of you to
line up on the baseline. Each time I blow my whistle we will perform the designated stretch.
We will begin our warm-up today with some dynamic stretches. The first stretch we will perform is the knee-up.
This stretch will help stretch our glutes and hamstrings.
It is important to get these muscles stretched because they are used a
lot in softball when we are running the bases and fielding ground balls. I will now demonstrate how to perform
the knee-up. The next stretch that
we will perform is the heel-up.
This stretch will work on getting our quads loose.
I will now demonstrate how to perform the heel-up.
The final dynamic stretch we will perform are arm circles.
This stretch will help us warm-up our shoulders.
This is a very important stretch because we use our shoulder muscles a
lot in softball. We will now
perform both forward and backward arm circles We will now move on and perform
some static stretches. The first
static stretch that we will perform today is called the sumo squat.
This will work on stretching out our groin area.
This is an important stretch because there is a lot of lateral movement
in softball. I will now
demonstrate how to perform the sumo squat. Our final stretch that we will perform
is a triceps stretch. This stretch
will help get both of our arms ready to play. I will now demonstrate two types of
triceps stretches. You all did a
great job with the stretches! Thank you very much for being attentive and well
behaved. Now that we have properly
stretched we will head out to the softball field.
I would like to remind all of you to be careful and use caution as you go
down the hill outside of the gym.
It may be wet and if you are not careful you could injure yourself.
Guided Practice-
I would now like the team that was
up to bat last time we played to go over to the fence and grab a glove. After you have a glove you all can head
out to the field. I will make sure
that all of you are in the correct positions before we begin to play. If you are on the team that will be
batting first today I would like you to line up along the fence like you did
last class. If you are waiting in
line to bat, I want you to make sure that you are paying attention at all
times. I would also like the
person that is on deck to stand behind the plate and throw the ball back to me
if the batter swings and misses.
Remember we are playing 3 out innings today.
This means we have to pay close attention to the way we run the
bases. We cannot advance on fly
balls that are caught unless we tag up first! I saw a lot of you running every time
the ball was hit. This is not
always a bad thing, but I want you to remember when the ball is hit in the air
to only take a few steps off of the base.
This way you will be able to advance to the next base (if the ball is
dropped) or get back on base (if the ball is caught).
Does anyone have any questions before we begin playing?
Independent Practice-
Students will now play a game of softball for the remainder of the period. The instructor will act as the pitcher
for both teams during the game. The instructor will also be able to provide the
students with tips to improve their performance (if needed).
Closure-
Great job today class! I want to thank all of you for giving great effort the entire class period today. I am
very pleased with the progress you all have made during this unit!
We will now head back to the gym to get changed.
Remember to be careful and cautious on your way back to the gym. Thank you and have a great
day!
Family/Community Connection-
I would like to point out the importance of the stretches that we performed
today during our warm-up. Even though these stretches were geared toward softball I want you all to remember
that any of these stretches can be performed before you partake in any kind of
physical activity. I would also recommend stretching whenever you have some free time. Stretching helps our
muscles increase in elasticity which helps them perform better in the
long-run. Stretching can also help decrease muscle soreness after performing physical activity.

Lesson Plan-Yoga
Essential Standard-
7.HF.3- Understand the importance of achieving and maintaining a
health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Clarifying Objectives-
PE.7.HF.3.3- Illustrate a variety of training methods.
Focus and Review-
Good morning class! Today we will be starting the yoga portion of our unit on
achieving or maintaining a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.. How many of you have heard of yoga
before? Does anyone you know
participate in yoga? (My mom goes
to yoga class 3 times a week!)
That’s very good Johnny!
For those of you that are unfamiliar with yoga have no worries! We will be embarking on a weeklong
journey of yoga. We will begin
today with some brief history and facts about this exercise.
Then we will move on to participate in a beginner yoga workout for the
remainder of the class. Before we
begin today’s lesson we will complete a short 10 minute warm-up.
We will start the warm-up with a quick 10 minute jog around the gym. Does everyone understand?
If so, we will now start the warm up activity!
Statement of Objectives:
Psychomotor- Students will use fundamental motor skills to
complete the beginner yoga routine.
Cognitive- Students will learn and understand the brief history
and benefits of yoga.
Affective- Students will be motivated to give their best effort
throughout the entire yoga unit.
Teacher Input-
Great job with the warm-up
class! I would like to begin today’s class by talking about the history of yoga.
It is said that the classical techniques of yoga date back more than
5,000 years! The word yoga means
“to join or yoke together”, and it brings the body and mind together into one
harmonious experience (americanyogaassociation.org).
Some experts believe that yoga made its way to the United States by the
late 1800’s. It did not become
popular however until the 1960’s.
There are over 100 different types of yoga known to exist today. Some of the most popular forms of yoga
practiced today are: Hatha yoga, Raja yoga, Jnana yoga, and Kharma yoga. Many physicians strongly recommend yoga
to their patients that are at risk for heart disease, as well as those with back
pain, arthritis, depression, and other chronic diseases. Yoga is extremely
effective at improving ones flexibility, strength, muscle tone, pain
prevention, better breathing, stress reduction, mental calmness, and body
awareness. Next I will take all
of you through some of the movements that we will be performing during today’s
yoga routine. Then we will
participate in the entire routine as a class. Does anyone have any questions?
Guided
Practice-
Before we begin our guided
practice I would like everyone to come to the front of the gym and grab a yoga
mat. After you have picked up your
mat I would like you to return to your assigned spots in your stretch
lines. Now that everyone has a
yoga mat I will now take you all through a few beginner yoga poses that we will
be seeing a lot of throughout this unit.
The first pose that we will be doing is called mountain pose.
I will now demonstrate the mountain pose for all of you.
After I perform this pose I would like all of you to try it out on your
own! I will be walking around to
check your form. Very good
class! The next pose that we will
be performing is the downward dog.
I will now demonstrate the downward dog pose for you all.
I would now like all of you to try the downward dog pose.
The next pose that I will demonstrate for you all is called the warrior
pose. (Demonstrate the warrior
pose for the class). Everyone go
ahead and try the warrior pose!
Remember to switch sides after you hold this pose for a full minute and a
half. The next pose that we are
moving on to is called tree pose.
I will now demonstrate this pose for all of you.
This pose can be challenging because it requires some balancing. Do not get frustrated if you have
trouble with this pose. This is
the first day of this unit and yoga may be very unfamiliar to some of you. Just do the best that you can and you
will improve on these poses with time.
The final pose that we will cover in this portion of class is called the
bridge pose. I will now
demonstrate the bridge pose for all of you. This is another pose that could be
challenging for some of you. Like I
said earlier this is another pose that will get better with time and
practice. I would now like you all
to try and perform the bridge pose.
Independent Practice- For the remaining 30 minutes of
the class period we will be following along with this yoga video.
I would like to remind all of you to take this exercise seriously. I want all of you to put forth 100%
effort during this routine. I will
be walking around the classroom throughout the entire video checking and
correcting everyone’s form (if need be).
This is a beginner’s routine that will put you through some of the poses
that we covered earlier in the class period as well as some new ones too. Does anyone have any questions before
we begin the video? If not, we
will get started!
Closure-
Great job class! You all worked so
hard throughout the entire class period today! Tonight I would like all of you
to write a journal entry about today’s yoga lesson.
You should write 1-2 pages on how yoga can benefit an individual that is
trying to improve or maintain their level of physical fitness.
Feel free to use your health textbooks or the internet to find extra
information. Along with the journal
entry I would like all of you to create your own yoga routine. You can use some
of the poses that we used during today’s routine since most of you are still new
to the art of yoga. I would also
like you to use the internet to find at least 3 new poses to include in your
routine. Are there any
questions about this assignment?
Great job today class! I want to thank all of you for giving great effort
the entire class period today.
Family/Community Connection-
I would like to encourage all of you to go home and talk to your parents and or
siblings about our yoga lesson!
Tell them about all of the positive health benefits that can come from
performing yoga. Show them some of
the poses that we worked on in class.
If they begin to take a liking to yoga perhaps your entire family can
find a local gym that offers yoga classes! This could be a great way to get the
whole family performing physical activity together!
Remember no to force trying yoga on your family members.
If they do not show interest or tell you that they do not want to try it
then let them be and ask them another time in the future!
I hope you all have a great day!
